Dag 5: På sporet af vikingerne i Ribe

De sidste fire dage har vi været på sporet af Bispens borg i Brink, men i dag har det været vikingetiden vi har gravet i. Dagen startede på Ribe Vikingecenter, som er en levende udstilling. Her formidler de historier fra vikingetiden med fokus på dem, som ikke tog på togt. Centeret fungerer både som en almindelig arbejdsplads og som en produktionsskole. Bjarne Clement, som er leder af centeret, viste os rundt, og forskellige ansatte fortalte historier, som havde relevans for os som arkæologistuderende. Efter en spændende tur stod den på sandwiches i caféen.

Næste stop på turen var museet Ribes Vikinger. Her skulle vi mødes med Morten Søvsø, som gav os valget mellem en byvandring med fokus på byens historie eller en rundtur på museet. Det tog ikke lang tid før vi alle var blevet enige om en byvandring i det dejlige solskinsvejr. Her så vi bl.a. det felt som museet skal udgrave snart, bindingsværkhuse helt tilbage fra 1600-tallet og Skt. Catharinæ kloster. Derefter fik vi mulighed for at se museet, inden vi skulle videre til næste punkt på dagsorden.

Vi mødtes med Henrik Ravn foran Ribe Domkirke, hvor vi fik lov at se nogle af de ting man normalt ikke må komme tæt på. Vi kom tæt på mosaikken i korets apsis, op i galleriet og fik lov at se messehagelerne. Herefter begav de modige sig op i toppen af tårnet. Der er over 250 trin derop, men det var udsigten værd. Henrik fortalte os, at den som har rekorden i at løbe flest gange op og ned på én time, var en arkæolog og han gjorde det hele 22 gange.

Så var det farvel til dem som skulle hjem i weekenden, mens de restende 7 tog tilbage til hytten for at nyde tiden. Indtil videre står weekenden på besøg af historiske steder i lokalområdet. Vi får travlt!

 

”In the footsteps of the Vikings”

The last four days, we have been on the track of the Bishops castle in Brink, but today we have been digging into the Viking age. The day began at the Ribe Vikingecenter (read: Ribe Viking Center), a living exhibition. They mediate stories from the Viking age, mainly focusing on those who did not venture on raids. The center functions as a regular workplace, as well as a production school. Bjarne Clement, the leader of the center, showed us around. Various staff members dressed as and portraying Vikings, told us stories with relevance to us as students of archaeology. After an interesting tour, it was time for a sandwich at the café.

Next stop on the trip was the museum Ribes Vikinger (read: Ribe’s Vikings). Here we met Morten Søvsø, who gave us a choice between a townwalk, focusing on the history of the town, or a tour around the museum. It did not take long for us to decide on a townwalk in the lovely sunny weather. Amongst other things, we saw the field which the museum will begin excavating soon, timbered houses from the 17^th century and forward, and Skt. Catharinæ Kloster (read: Saint Catherine’s Convent). Afterwards, we were given the opportunity to explore the museum on our own, before the next stop.

We met Henrik Ravn infront at Ribe Domkirke (read: Ribe Cathedral), and with him we came to enter and explore places normally closed to the public. We saw the mosaics of the choir’s apse up close, entered the gallery to the left, and saw and touched the chasubles. Hereafter, the brave ventured up the tower. It is more than 250 steps, but the view was worth it. Henrik told us, the record for running up and down the tower most times in an hour, was held by an archaeologist who managed to do it 22 times.

Then it was goodbye to those who went home in the weekend, while the remaining 7 drove back to the huts to enjoy the free time. Thus far, trips to local historical sites are on the agenda for the weekend.
